I can't believe I have been ordering from sources than direct from the manufacture all this time. Even health food stores. They don't have an expiration date nor batch number so how am I supposed to know how old the oil is.
They are probably 5 years old. The dust you can see was wiped away and there is dust where they missed wiping. Some get a new label. Oh, how convenient. Maybe its because they old labels got faded. Another way they try to scam me. I don't want essential oil thats been sitting on the shelf for 3 years.
It is also a red flag when I see a company selling "pure, wildcrafted oil" ON SALE. Again, probably because its old and all the therapeutic qualies are bunk.
I even see brands on Ebay that are even being sold cheaper than I can get them at wholesale. I've seen Young Living oil just the other day. How can they be selling it cheaper than I pay. REason, Its bunk. Its old and who knows how long its been in someones hot car.
I buy these oils I find cheap on Ebay to just see what they are about. Of course, nearly every time there is something fishy about them. They are thicker than the current harvest. They are cloudy, the smell as they have been oxidized.
Try getting lemon or orange oil that is 2 years old. They only have a 2 year shelf life if stored in peak conditions. Oils like frankincense usually go on sale after 2 years. This oil starts to get bunk after 3 years. Oils like Neroli and Tea tree oil have about a 4 year life.
Helichrysum and lavender usually get bunk after 5 years. Sandalwood and Patchouli can last close to 8 years although many people keep them longer.
The reason is that the low shelf life oils have more monoterpene and less ketone and phenols. The oils that have a very long shelf life have more Sesquiterpene and more esters and low aldehyde. There are books on this so people can look up the oils shelf life easily. By infusing the bottles or putting an infused sticker on it, it can increase the shelf life of the oil. Putting the sticker under a banana or avocado can show an example of how the banana ripens (or rots) at a different speed than one that doesn't have the infused sticker under it.
I only carry oils from current harvests. I do not use nor sell oils that are older than a year. If it's not the current harvest I won't use it. If anyone wants samples of any oils that I carry let me know.
Discounted Oil Scams that have a 5 year shelf life
1 year old oils: market value 18 to 20% lower
2 year old oil 40% off (retail should be 30% off
Notice: After 2 years, the therapeutic constituents start to degrade
3 year old 70% off
about 60% of the constituents are denatured by this time.
4 year old 80% of the oil is bunk
5 year, about 5% of the therapeutic constituents are still intact.

Oils that are old and have lost their vibrancy I do not consider therapeutic.
If the oils do not have their full aroma the oil may be degraded.
Most often the oil has been oxidized.
Note: Many oils will start to ferment and some oils can turn a reddish brown so when they say oils last forever that is not true. Essential oils DO have a shelf life. Aromatherapists say to throw the oil away when certain oils change color like this.
